Why your weight fluctuates every day

Updated September 21, 2026 · 4 min read

You ate well all week, and the scale went up 1.5 kg this morning. Before you decide the diet is not working: daily weight is mostly noise. The signal is in the trend.

What causes daily weight swings

Body fat changes slowly. These change quickly, and account for most day-to-day movement:

  • Water: sodium, carbohydrates and hormonal changes all shift how much water your body holds. A salty dinner can add a kilogram overnight.
  • Food in transit: the weight of what you have eaten and not yet digested.
  • Glycogen: each gram of stored carbohydrate is stored with several grams of water.
  • Hormones: for many women, the menstrual cycle can shift weight by 1–3 kg.
  • Training: hard workouts cause temporary inflammation and water retention.
  • Time and conditions: weight is lowest first thing in the morning after using the bathroom.

Fat loss is slow. The scale is not.

At a healthy rate of loss, you are losing perhaps 0.25–0.75 kg of fat a week, which is around 0.05–0.1 kg a day. Water fluctuations of 1–2 kg completely overwhelm that on any given morning. This is why people feel like they are failing during weeks when they are in fact progressing.

Use a trend, not a data point

The fix is to weigh yourself regularly, ideally daily under the same conditions, and look at a rolling average such as the last 7 days. A trend line smooths out water noise and shows the direction you are actually heading. Compare this week’s average with last week’s. If it is going down, the plan is working, whatever today’s number says.

FIIT plots a 7-day weight trend and a 30-day projection for exactly this reason: so you make decisions from the trend and not from a single weigh-in.

When to actually change something

If your 2–3 week trend is flat and you have been following your plan, that is the moment to adjust: reduce intake by 100–200 kcal a day or add some activity. Changing anything in response to a single scary morning usually makes things worse.

FAQ

Why did I gain 2 lbs overnight?

Almost certainly water and food weight, not fat. Gaining a pound of fat requires eating roughly 3,500 calories above maintenance. Sodium, carbs, hormones and hard training commonly move the scale 1–3 lb in a day.

Should I weigh myself every day?

If it does not stress you out, yes: more data points make the trend clearer. Weigh under the same conditions each time, and look at the weekly average rather than individual readings.

How long until I see results on the scale?

Give it two to three weeks before judging. Early changes in either direction are frequently water.
